Introduction

Salafis, also known as Wahhabis or Ghair Muqallids (non-conformists), commonly allege that Ahmadis oppose the majority of the Muslim Ummah and are therefore wrong and misguided. However, what is often overlooked in these discussions is the fact that prominent Salafi scholars themselves have openly acknowledged that the overwhelming majority of Muslims, throughout history and across the Muslim world, do not follow the Salafi methodology and instead are overwhelmingly Maturidi or Ash’ari in creed. This article presents clear statements from their own scholars admitting this reality, exposing the inconsistency in using “opposition to the majority” as an argument to delegitimize other groups.

Salafi Scholarship: Salafis Are a Minority

MUHAMMAD IBN ABD AL-WAHHAB رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ (d. 1206H)

To start with, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ said that Islam will return to being strange just as it began, adhered to only by a few individuals. He warned against relying on the large number of people or their consensus as a proof of truth, noting that such reasoning was used by the disbelievers of the past to reject the messengers.

While a separate article will delve deeper into this “majority fallacy,” including how various scholars have understood the term Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama‘ah, this article will specifically highlight how scholars respected within the Salafi tradition have themselves acknowledged that the majority of Muslims do not adhere to Salafi or Wahhabi interpretations.

[…] the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions described it before it occurred, warned people against it, and informed that none would adhere to the religion except one after another, and that Islam would become strange as it began. You have known that when ‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the early days of Islam: “Who is with you in this?” He said: “A free man and a slave,” meaning Abu Bakr and Bilal. So if Islam returns as it began, how ignorant is one who argues based on the multitude of people and their consensus, and similar arguments, when faced with doubts that are great in the eyes of their adherents but insignificant before Allah and those of knowledge among His creation, as Allah says: “Rather, they say like what the former peoples said” [Al-Mu’minun: 81]. I know of no argument you use except that Allah has mentioned in His Book that the disbelievers used it to deny the messengers, such as the consensus of people, obedience to the elite, and other such things.

[Al-Durar Al-Saniyyah, vol 1, pg. 41]

SHAH ISMAIL DEHLVI رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ (d. 1246H)

Shah Ismail Dehlvi رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ was a respected scholar among Salafis who highlighted that the majority of Muslims are inclined toward shirk by engaging in acts such as istighatha (seeking help from deceased saints), which are largely considered permissible within the Ashari and Maturidi schools of theology. He similarly attributed this trend to a prophecy of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, who foretold that true believers would disappear.

Polytheism is generally widespread among the people and the concept of Monotheism is in scarcity. Many people who claim to be the bearers of Faith do not understand the meanings of Tauhid and Shirk (Monotheism and polytheism). Apparently they are Muslims, but they are unconsciously involved in the acts of Shirk. Therefore, first we should try to understand the meanings of Tauhid (Monotheism) and Shirk (polytheism) so that we may know about their advantages and disadvantages as directed by Qur’an and Sunnah. […] It means that the majority of people who outwardly profess to have faith in Allah are in fact entangled in the quagmire of polytheism. […] Allah will send down a blissful and chaste breeze which will end the lives of all those having the least amount of Faith whereas the vice-ridden and irreligious people shall be spared to live on. The hearts of these people shall be devoid of the dignity of the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) nor shall they have any interest in religion. They shall eagerly snap on the customs and rituals of their grand-fathers who were none other than the ignorant polytheists. A man who adopts the ways of the polytheists will naturally become one of them. […] Thus it becomes known to us that the old polytheism shall also be wide-spread during the concluding periodic phase of the world. Presently, all kinds of Shirk (both the ancient and new ones) are rampant among the Muslims. What the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) prophesied earlier seems to be coming true now. For instance, the Muslims are treating Prophets, saints, Imams and martyrs etc. polytheistically.

[English Translation PDF: Taqwiyat-ul-Iman]

SANAULLAH AMRITSARI (d. 1367H)

Building on the perspective of Shah Ismail Dehlvi رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ, who described the widespread prevalence of polytheism among Muslims, Sanaullah Amritsari, the editor of the Ahl-e-Hadith magazine stated that approximately eighty years ago, the Muslim population of Amritsar, Punjab, followed the same creed as those known today as Hanafi Barelvi, adherents of the Maturidi school of theology.

In Amritsar, the Muslim population is equal to the non-Muslim population. About eighty years ago, almost all Muslims followed the same belief, which today is called the Barelvi Hanafi school of thought.

[Sham-e-Tauheed, pg. 53]

AL-ALBANI (d. 1420H)

Salafis often maintain that it is within the fitrah (natural disposition) of lay Muslims to believe that Allah is above the Throne, so when asked “Where is Allah?” they instinctively point upwards. From this, they try to prove that the masses of Muslims follow the Salafi Athari creed. However, al-Albani disagreed with this view and remarked:

If we ask ordinary people and elites: ‘Where is Allah?’, we will find them looking at us with disapproving eyes, ignoring and unaware that it is the Prophet who decreed it for us in his Sunnah. Then, despite this, we see them confused and not knowing how to respond.

[Mawsuat al-Allamah al-Imam Mujaddid al-Asr Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, vol 2, pg. 593]

He further stated:

Know that the majority of Muslims today are either Ash’ari or Maturidi, will Islam succeed by them?

[Jami Turath al-Allamah al-Albani fi al-Manhaj wa al-Ahdath al-Kubra, vol 5, pg. 291]

For every Maliki is an Ash’ari, every Shafi’i is an Ash’ari except a few, and every Hanbali is an Ash’ari except a few especially in our time! […] The three Madhaheb, especially the Malikis and Shafi’is, are nothing but Asha’ira. And every Hanafi is a Maturidi.

AL-UTHAYMIN (d. 1421H)

Al-Uthaymin corroborates this sentiment:

The Ashā‘ira are the most widespread in Muslims lands, and that is why we must know their beliefs entirely to know how to respond to them so that we can eradicate them entirely.

RABI’ AL-MADKHALI (d. 1446H)

Rabi’ al-Madkhali noted that during earlier centuries, the Salafi creed had nearly disappeared, with its followers across the Islamic world being so few they could be counted on one’s fingers.

Abu’l-Qasim lived in the second half of the fifth century and the first third of the sixth century Hijri. During this time, various sects had fully emerged, including the Khawarij, Shia, Qadariyyah, Mu’tazilah, Jahmiyyah, Jabriyyah, and Ash’ariyyah, which was predominant in the Islamic world at that time. The Ash’arites called themselves “Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama’ah” (People of the Sunnah and Community). The Salafi methodology, the approach of Ahmad ibn Hanbal and the preceding Imams of Islam, had nearly disappeared. The creed of the Salaf had become strange, and its followers throughout the Islamic world could be counted on one’s fingers.

SALEH AL-FAWZAN

Salih al-Fawzan admitted that historically even the Hanbali scholars of Najd followed the creed of the Ashʿariyyah and Maturidiyyah, stating:

As for the creed, they (Hanbali scholars of Najd) followed the creed of the Asha’irah and Maturidiyah, and they had Sufism, innovations (bid’ah), and whatever other lands had, in fact, they exceeded others due to the abundance of ignorance among them in their desert regions and villages.

Introduction

The Anti-Ahmadis allege that people convert to the Jama’at-e-Ahmadiyya for monetary or other similar benefits. They use the examples of the community’s humanitarian works in poor areas to lure the population into Ahmadiyyat. They claim that we build schools, and hospitals and provide other benefits to these people to force them to convert.

In this article, we will show a few examples that completely refute this belief.

Firm resolve of Ahmadis in Burkina Faso

On January 11th, 2023, terrorists killed 9 Ahmadis in a small village of Mahdiabad, Burkina Faso. The incident was completely unprovoked and a cold-blooded murder. These terrorists visited the Ahmadiyya mosque at Isha, asked for the beliefs of Ahmadis, lined up 9 senior members in front of the kids and women, and martyred them all.

The terrorists asked the Imam, Bouriema Bidiga, to denounce Ahmadiyyat to which he refused and said that they can kill him but he won’t denounce the truth. One by one, they asked each of the 9 members the same question and slaughtered them in front of their families.

If these people in a small and poor village had converted due to worldly benefits, they would not have shown such resolve and faith. They would have easily denounced Ahmadiyya Islam due to fear or to save their lives. Instead, they claimed martyrdom with pride and honor. This example can only be seen within the Muslims like the example of Imam Hussain (RA) or Abdul Lateef (RA) at the time of the Promised Messiah (AS).

Even the disciples of Isa (AS) denounced their faith when confronted by Romans after the attempted crucifixion of Isa (AS). This is what the Gospels describe to us. While the example of the followers of Islam and the Promised Messiah (AS) showed the completely opposite character.

Source: https://twitter.com/pressahmadiyya/status/1613874371105361920

Testimony of the Non-Ahmadi African lady

Another such allegation is that Ahmadi Muslims open orphanages and schools to brainwash kids into Islam and Ahmadiyyat. This is refuted by the countless students of these schools around the world. One such example is by this lady:

I went to an Ahmadiyyah school and I like how they don’t impose their beliefs on others. A lot of my friends are Ahmadis.

Introduction

In this article, we will refute another allegation of the Anti-Ahmadis who claim the Promised Messiah (A.S) died of cholera. They claim that since he died of cholera, he is a false prophet. This is not only baseless but also contradictory to the primary sources that describe the death of the Promised Messiah (A.S).

Refutation

1) Promised Messiah A.S did not have any symptoms of cholera

Given the statement from the medical doctor at that time, it is clear that the Promised Messiah did not have cholera. His symptoms negate this lie.

Cholera is caused by a bacterial infection that can cause watery diarrhea via increased sodium ions in the intestine, which in turn increases the intake of water. This can cause continuous diarrhea which can be up to 1 liter per hour. Looking at the stools, one can predict cholera given the unique characteristic of pale, milky appearance that resembles water in which rice has been rinsed.

Most people exposed to the cholera bacterium (Vibrio cholerae) don’t become ill and don’t know they’ve been infected. But because they shed cholera bacteria in their stool for seven to 14 days, they can still infect others through contaminated water.

Most cases of cholera that cause symptoms cause mild or moderate diarrhea that’s often hard to tell apart from diarrhea caused by other problems. Others develop more-serious signs and symptoms of cholera, usually within a few days of infection.

Symptoms of cholera infection can include:

Diarrhea. Cholera-related diarrhea comes on suddenly and can quickly cause dangerous fluid loss — as much as a quart (about 1 liter) an hour. Diarrhea due to cholera often has a pale, milky appearance that resembles water in which rice has been rinsed.

Nausea and vomiting. Vomiting occurs especially in the early stages of cholera and can last for hours.

Dehydration. Dehydration can develop within hours after cholera symptoms start and range from mild to severe. A loss of 10% or more of body weight indicates severe dehydration.Signs and symptoms of cholera dehydration include irritability, fatigue, sunken eyes, a dry mouth, extreme thirst, dry and shriveled skin that’s slow to bounce back when pinched into a fold, little or no urinating, low blood pressure, and an irregular heartbeat.

[Mayo Clinic, Symptoms of Cholera]

The symptoms of cholera include using the washroom continuously and vomiting continuously. However, the Promised Messiah (as) only had stomach problems and vomited. This shows that it was diarrhea and dehydration and not cholera. He also did not use the washroom for many hours before passing away. This is proven by eyewitness accounts as seen below:

“Around 2-3 am, Promised Messiah (A.S) got loose motion and due to which his pulse could not be felt and was called with Maulvi Hakeem Noorudin (R.A), Khawaja Kamaludin and Dr Mirza Yaqub Baig. When Mirza Yaqub arrived, Promised Messiah (A.S) called him and told him of the situation and asked him to recommend medicine. He also said in reality the medicine is in the heavens. He said you should try to heal and pray for me.

His treatment started and was going successfully while we were standing there. But the pulse was not felt so much so that around 10 am in the morning is when Promised Messiah (A.S) soul met with his truest love i.e God. (“Verily we belong to allah, and verily to him do we return.”)

During this period, promised messiah as kept saying this in an extremely loving tone:

“O my Beloved, O my Beloved, O my Beloved Allah, O my Beloved Allah”

And when he heard the azan for the fair prayer, he asked whether it was time to pray. And even with extreme weakness, he made intention and prayed salat. During this moment, mother of the faithful, Amma Jan (R.A) (wife of the Promised Messiah) showed an exemplary character. She was sitting with her burga on and she would sometimes fall in prostration while repeating these words, “O Living God, O my beloved God. O Knower of all, O Resurrectors of the dead, help us. O my only God, forgive my sins, I am a sinner. O my Allah, give my life to him [Promised Messiah]”

2) None of the doctors with him thought he had cholera

He was accompanied by multiple doctors during his last days such as Hazrat Maulvi Noorudin RA, Mirza Yaqub Baig, and Dr Syed Muhammad Hussain Shah. None of them came to the conclusion that he had cholera or treated him for it. Neither did they quarantine him or burnt his belongings in fear of the spread of the disease. The Promised Messiah AS stayed in the same bed with his wife, Hazrat Amma Jaan until he passed away around 10 am in the morning.

3) Medical certificate confirmed he died of Diarrhea

The Promised Messiah AS died in Lahore. He was buried in Qadian. For a body to be transported on train/rail the body must be examined by a government medical doctor and then given a certificate confirming that it had no infectious disease. This was done due to the rampant waves of epidemics across the globe at this time. In the British Indian Railway rulebook, it says:

4) No one else in his family/friends got cholera

Another reason that proves he did not have Cholera is that all of his family members, friends, and his companions, did not get Cholera. Even though they were living with him, eating the same food and drinking the same water, while in the same environment. As it is commonly known, Cholera spreads through food and water, it would be near impossible that no one else in his company contracted Cholera.

5) No cholera wave in Punjab during May 1908

Another consideration is the seasonal variation of cholera. As seen in this study of cholera, it clearly states that in the Punjab region, the disease has a tendency to reach epidemic portions only during the monsoon months. The Promised Messiah died in May, which is the dry season in India. Not only do the symptoms not match, but the time of the season was not even in line with cholera at that time.

This is confirmed by the following source:

Nevertheless, in certain non-endemic areas, e.g., in the Punjab, the disease has a tendency to reach epidemic proportions only during the monsoon months.

Refutations of further allegations

We have proven with ample evidence that the Promised Messiah AS did not have cholera. Now we will refute the common objections that the Anti-Ahmadis bring up regarding it.

Allegation 1: Promised Messiah AS claimed he had cholera

They claim that the Promised Messiah AS himself said he had cholera as per the quote in Hayat-e-Nasir.

The night Hazrat Sahib became sick, that night I had already gone to sleep in my quarters. When he was greatly afflicted, I was awoken. When I reached Hazrat Sahib, and saw his condition, he saw me and remarked, “Mir Sahib, I have (have I) been afflicted with epidemic cholera.(?)

Firstly, even if we accept the words at face value, it is possible that they were stated as a question, and not as a statement of fact. In Urdu, sometimes a simple change in the tonation of the sentence makes it into a question. The same is found in other languages.

For example, “You went to the store.” can be changed with a simple change in intonation from a statement to a question: “You went to the store?”. It is thus possible that the Promised Messiah (AS) was asking a question and not making a statement, in which case the translation would be “Do I have cholera?”.

Secondly, if it was not a question, it is also possible that the Promised Messiah (AS) was wrong about what he thought at that moment while he was extremely sick. It is not a far-fetched idea that he made such a mistake. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) also did something similar during his last illness. He thought that somehow the poison that he did not even ingest in Khaibar (3-4 years earlier) may be the cause of his illness, even though this was not medically possible and against the Quran itself. The narration says:

The Prophet (ﷺ) in his ailment in which he died, used to say, “O `Aisha! I still feel the pain caused by the food I ate at Khaibar, and at this time, I feel as if my aorta is being cut from that poison.”

While the Quran says that whoever lies about God Almighty, Allah will cut off their aorta:

And if he had forged and attributed any sayings to Us,

We would surely, have seized him by the right hand,

And then surely, We would have severed his life-artery,

Allegation 2: Promised Messiah AS used Chlorodyne

They claim that Promised Messiah AS used Chlorodyne in Lahore, a few days before his death. Chlorodyne is a medicine used for Cholera. thus, he died of Cholera. The narration they use is the following:

This was written to me by Peer Muhammad Manzoor sahab thru Molvi Abdur Rehman Mubashar that hazrat sahab while in Lahore, perhaps a day before his death once he came out from inside and said I have had excessive loose motion today so I took three drops of Chlorodyne. This humble self says that hazrat sb had the complaint of loose motion most of his life time. But during last days he suffered from it one night before his death. It is however, possible that he might have slightly suffered from loose motion one or two days before his death and then it has suppressed.

[Seeratul Mahdi, vol 3,pg 721]

It is true that Chlorodyne is a medicine for cholera but along with it, it is also used to cure Diarrhea, Dysentery, Fever, Spams e.t.c. This is proven by the following advertisement of the same medicine from the time of Promised Messiah (AS). Thus, to use this medicine to prove he had cholera while ignoring the other diseases it is used for is a stretch. Especially since we know that the Promised Messiah (AS) had the disease of diarrhea all his life.

A similar Ad is seen in Paisa Akhbar Lahore from 1898 where Cholorodyne is used to treat all kinds of illnesses as described above.

The newspaper quote says that Cholera could be one of the possibilities of his death and does not state that he definitively did die of Cholera. It is clear the newspaper does not have any clear sources rather it is speculating based on what others have said including the mischief-mongering opponents of the Promised Messiah (AS). Thus, it is deceptive and dishonest to even attempt to use this as evidence by Anti-Ahmadis.

Conclusion

This article has categorically proven that the Promised Messiah (AS) did not die of Cholera. His death certificate, along with the lack of symptoms of Cholera is the biggest proof of it. May Allah guide those who continuously lie on the Prophet of Allah. Ameen.

Introduction

A common lie spread by the anti-Ahmadis is that Ahmadiyya Islam was created by the British Empire, who supposedly appointed Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani (AS) as their agent. In this article, we will show how absurd and illogical this claim truly is.

Everyone is a British Agent

Before we respond to this allegation, it is crucial to mention that this allegation isn’t exclusively spammed against Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS). Rather, it is the habit of the non-Ahmadi Muslims that they label everyone they disagree with as a British Agent.

Ahmad Raza Khan, the founder of Barelvi sect is labelled a British agent and it’s all a mere google search away.

Similarly, Ashraf Ali Thanvi, the founder of Deobandi sect has the same allegations about him.

The Salafi (Ahl-e-Hadith / Wahhabi) sect is also called a “Brainchild of British Intelligence agency”.1

Ahmad (AS) is an Anti-British Rebel

Modern-day critics claim that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was a British agent sent to divide Muslims. Ironically, his contemporaries said the exact opposite. They accused him of secretly planning a rebellion against Christians and British rule. Sunni Muslims, Salafis, and Christian clergy of that era made formal complaints about Ahmad (AS), warning the British government of his “danger.”

Muhammad Hussain Batalvi (Salafi/Sunni Scholar)

Batalvi, the leader of the Ahl-e-Hadith sect and a vocal opponent of the Promised Messiah (AS), collaborated with Christians and other groups to spread lies about him. Consider these two examples:

“His deception is proved by the fact that in his heart he considers it lawful to put an end to the authority of a non-Muslim government and to plunder its belongings Therefore, it would not be proper on the part of the Government to rely on him and it would be necessary to be aware of him, otherwise such harm might be suffered at the hands of this Mahdi of Qadian as was experienced at the hands of the Sudanese Mahdi.”

[Ishaat-us-Sunnah, vol. 16, pg. 168]

Similarly, in an English & Christian magazine, he writes:

What is really dangerous is the course chalked out, for instance, by the Mirza for him- self. He claims to be both, Masin aud Mabdi, and this he does without possessing any heavenly signs. The dangerous character of such a claim will become app rent when the number of the Mirza’s followers will in- crease to an unmanageable extent. Their present number, under the existing conditions and disabilities, can hardly prove danger us but that is no proof against the strong presumption that they are likely to bee me a source of trouble in the future. The doings of the Mahdi of the Soudan and the amount of trouble he gave to the world are not forgotten yet. The movement set on foot by th Mirza in India does not in its essence much difer to my mind from that of the Mahdi of the Soudan.

What I should like to add in that connection is that the Mirza on page 601 of his book the Dafi-ul Uaswas writes:- “When a man disobeys God, the Real Master (God) confiscates his property and takes away his life if be chooses to punish him for his dis- obedience and this he does either through a prophet or direct.” When such are the preachings of the Mirza and when he considers the British Government guilty of disobeying God, also when he openly invites the Government to follow his religion under the threat of heavenly vengeance, who can shut bis eyes against the conclusion? In th light of the above fact the meaning and the worth of the Mirza’s “exhortations” about the unlawfulness of Jehad against the Government cannot for a moineut remain concealed. In fact such “exhortations” cannot deceive the Government and cannot credit the Mirza with good faith unless, of course, the Mirza openly declares that he relinquishes all claims to Masihism and Mahdism and he forsakes the views he has been holding on the subject. It is really strange that such a large number of Muhammadans should become disloyal by simply believing in the coming, in the future, of Masih and Mahdi, while a handful of the followers of the Mirza should remain loyal even after believing the Mirza to be the promised

Masih and Mahdi

Padri Imaddudin (Christian Missionary)

He was a Christian missionary who was also a staunch enemy of the Promised Messiah (AS). In a book that he writes against Ahmad (AS), Imaddudin lies:

“And the Messiah is claiming that he wants a large group of Muslims to become his followers, and he is looking for an opportunity to disrupt the peace in India and ruin many homes.

Don’t you think that the imaginary Imam Mahdi is present in Sudan, now the imaginary Messiah should arise from India and the two should unite to punish the infidels.”

[Tauzin ul-Aqwal, pg. 5]

Qazi Fazal Ahmad (Sunni Scholar)

A Muslim scholar writes

But unfortunately it was not successful, otherwise he(Mirza Ghulam Ahmad) would have certainly rebelled and killed the missionaries, destroyed the cross, and forced the Muslims too to accept their claim.

Mirza Sahib says that I am a well-wisher of the government. My father gave horses and men. But the Christian missionaries, who are co-religionists, spiritual leader and elders of the current government…he labels them Dajjal. And to have them murdered, he calls himself the Messiah, then how can he claim to be the well-wisher of the government? Can an enemy of the government’s spiritual leader and elders be a friend of the government? Never! Is not an enemy and murderer of the senior members of the government also an enemy and murderer of the government itself? Of course! Of course! But the regret is that Mirza Sahib does not have an army of one hundred thousand. Otherwise, you would see Mirza Sahib take action. And remember, when Mirza Sahib has even five thousand troops, that very day in accordance with his revelation “کم من فئتہ الخ” he would fight and would be so confident of victory that he would insist on the truth of his revelation even if it meant dying. But this hope seems unfounded to me.

[Kalma Fazal-e-Rahmani, pg. 274-276]

Within this same page, he writes in the footnote that when Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) claims that his father gave 50 horses to the government during the rebellion of 1857, that was a lie. Why? Fazal Ahmad claims that if his father did give, then why does he not do it himself? Why does he not help the government now?

The Civil Military Gazette, Lahore (Christian)

This Christian magazine wrote an article lying that the Promised Messiah (AS) is a rebel in secrecy. Once he has enough followers, he will indeed prove to be a danger to the government. Ahmad (AS) replied to these lies and explained the Islamic stance on rebellion.

In the reply to the clarifications of Ahmad (AS), the Gazette continues to lie even more but with a new logic:

“…ignores the real point at issue: which is, that he has attacked, and is attacking, not the British Government, and its officials, but Christianity and its missionaries, and in such a manner as is likely to cause very bitter and dangerous feelings in the minds of his followers against the religion of their rulers and its exponents. In the very pamphlet, which he issues as an apology for himself he repeats the epithet for Christian missionaries that The Muhammadan protested against-Dajjal (an Arabic word signifying sorcerer or perverter of the truth). The Maulvi on to say goes that the Christianity of the present day is, “ridiculous,” and “is the outcome of human wickedness.” The pamphlet contains an admission to the effect that the Maulvi had declared in some of his books that he was the promised Messiah (Christ). It will be seen, therefore, that it is scarcely an exaggeration to call the man, even from his own description of himself, “dangerous.””

The opposing claims from different eras demonstrate that Ahmad’s (AS) critics have no consistent truth, only contradictions.

Sunni funding from British & non Muslims

Why did these scholars report Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) to the British? Simple: to gain favor. They were receiving grants and financial aid from the British government.

Muhammad Hussain Batalvi (Salafi/Sunni Scholar)

Batalvi mentions the financial benefits he got from the British government. Let’s take a look at his own words:

The agricultural land that Allah Almighty has granted me through the government is 4 Murabba (100 acres) in size.

[Ishaatus Sunnah, vol. 19, no. 1, 1902]

Similarly, Nadwatul Ulema and Darul Uloom Deoband were financially helped by the British government. This is the reason, all Sunni scholars of British India were in favor of the British government and deemed Jihad against them as Haram.

Moreover, ‘Sunni’ mosques still receive huge amounts of funding from Kafir government like UK, USA and Canada. Green Lane Masjid in UK received 2.2 million pounds of funding from the government.2

Is Jihad abrogated?

When anti-Ahmadis realize their own scholars never called Mirza Sahib a British agent, they switch tactics and claim he “abrogated Jihad”—a supposed act of Kufr.

Firstly, it is the belief of the ‘Sunnis’ that multiple Quranic commandments are abrogated! As per them, anywhere between 5-500 verses are abrogated. This means that the verses exist in Quran but they are actually useless. They cannot be quoted as proof in Aqeedah (Beliefs) nor Fiqh (Jurisprudence).3

Secondly, it is also the belief of the ‘Sunnis’ that more verses of the Holy Quran will be abrogated by Isa (AS) on his 2nd coming. Rather than following Quran and Hadith, he will abrogate multiple other commandments like Jizyah, and other verses pertaining to religious freedom. They believe that Isa (AS) will give only 2 options to non Muslim (women, old etc) – convert to Islam or die by the sword.4 It is ironic that these people would dare raise allegations on Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS).

Lastly, it is the belief of Ahmadis that NO verse in the Quran is abrogated. Not even a dot in the Quran can be abrogated. It is the final word of God. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) mentioned the same throughout his life.

Agent because claimed rebelling against British is Haram?

When the “abrogated Jihad” claim fails, the next lie is that Mirza Sahib was a British agent because he called rebellion Haram. By that logic, all Sunni scholars were British agents too—because they unanimously declared rebellion Haram!

Firstly, If that is the criteria for being a British Agent, then all the ‘Sunni’ scholars are also British agent. ‘Sunni’ scholars from all different sects (Hanafi, Barelvi, Deobandi, Salafi etc) deemed it Haram to rebel against the British government because they provided full religious freedom to the Indian Muslims.

Lastly, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) only mentioned the what Islam says regarding rebellion. Islam does not allow Muslims to rebel against a government after giving their oaths of loyalty, especially when the government is protecting and ensuring the religious freedom of the Muslims. Under the rule of the British government, Muslims had complete religious freedom to pray, fast, do dawah (tabligh) and even refute Christianity, the religion of the British officials.

This is why Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) declared that the Jihad of today is to respond to the attacks of non-Muslims in a way they attack. Since non-Muslims were attacking Islam intellectually, the response should be similar. Until of course, Allah brings about other conditions in the world.

The Jihad of this age is to strive in upholding the word of Islam, to refute the objections of the opponents, to propagate the excellences of the Islamic faith, and to proclaim the truth of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, throughout the world. This is Jihad till God Almighty brings about other conditions in the world.

Praised the British Government = Agent?

When all else fails, anti-Ahmadis claim Ahmad (AS) was an agent because he praised the British. But praising someone does not make one their agent—unless you’re intellectually dishonest.

But we understand that there are such people around us that posses such weak intellectual capabilities. So for them, we will only show references of their own Ulema who not only declared Jihad against the British Haram but also said statements like:

Rebels against the British are not Muslims but Mushrikun (polytheists)

British government is “God’s Mercy” upon us

British government is a pride for us, more than the Ottoman Khilafat.

British India is better than all the Muslim countries like Ottoman Khilafat, Iran, Sudan etc

Read about these in this article.

Why praise the British government?

This last section is for the honest researchers who have nothing to do with the lies exposed above. Some people ask why did Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) praise the British so much? It makes sense that he highlighted the good aspects of the government once or twice but there are many more such references of him praising. These are the reasons:

1) Heartfelt gratitude

Ahmad (AS) praised the government to fulfill the commandment mentioned in the ahadith.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah.

[Sunan Abi Dawud 4811]

British government saved the Muslims in India, specifically Punjab and western provinces, from the extreme persecution of the Sikhs. Sikhs had banned Azan (Muslim call to prayer), prayers and destroyed many mosques. Muslims had absolutely no religious freedom during their rule. Thus, it is the duty of every Muslim extend their gratitude to those who have helped them.

This is why the Promised Messiah (AS) states:

Many who lived under Sikh rule are still with us today. They should come forward and tell others about the circumstances of Islam and the Muslims at that time. The adhan [Call for Prayer], which is a mandatory tenet of Islam, was considered a crime. No one who called the adhan could survive the hatchets and spears of the Sikhs. Did God err in freeing the Muslims from the Sikhs’ transgressions and in delivering them to the sanctuary of British rule? As soon as this government took power, the Muslims of Punjab were, for all practical purposes, granted their faith anew.

[British Government and Jihad, pg. 15]

2) Mission of Messiah

Another reason for mentioning the religious freedom of the British government was to correct the beliefs of the Muslims, which is the job of the Messiah. He had to remind the Muslims to leave the idea of rebellion and Jihad against a government that provides them religious freedom and who saved them from the persecution of the Sikhs. He had to consistently remind Muslims that it is unislamic and against the Quran and Hadith to rebel against one’s government.

This government protects the lives and property of Muslims and safeguards them from the attacks of every oppressor. I did not do this work out of fear of the government, nor in the hope of any reward from it, but solely in accordance with the command of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

[Ruhani Khazain, vol. 8, pg. 40-41, Nurul Haqq, Part 1]

3) Response to the Rebel Mahdi Allegation

One more reason that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) mentioned his belief about being loyal to the government was because all his enemies, non-Muslims, Hindus, Christians and even Sunni Muslims, were reporting him to the government and writing false agenda pieces in media by labelling him an Anti-British rebel.

Alot of the statements in the books of the Promised Messiah (AS) are merely a response to such allegations. It was his duty to dispel any false information about him in newspapers, books and government reports. We have already mentioned these allegations in detail in the section above.

Often the enemies and self-interested people who harbor enmity and opposition towards every new sect, convey false reports to the government and trouble the government with mischievous and fruitless activities. Since the government is not omniscient, it is possible that the government authorities may develop some suspicion or lean towards suspicion due to the frequency of such false informers.

Therefore, I am writing down a few necessary points for the information of the high government authorities:

[Ruhani Khazain, vol. 13, pg. 337, Ishtahar, 24 Feburary 1894]

…he continued to convey to the Government his unfounded views that I was secretly a rebel and was more dangerous than even the Sudanese Mahdi.

[The True Nature of the Mahdi, pg. 17]

Wanted the favor of the Government?

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) never got any favors from the government, nor does the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community get any till this day. Our community is run solely on the contributions of the Ahmadi Muslims alone. No government, nor an outside entity donates to us, nor do we seek their donations.

In this section, we will put a final nail in the coffin for this allegation. If Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) wanted any favor from the British government or if he wanted to appease them, he would not have used such harsh facts in regards to them and their spiritual fathers (the Christian clergy). These statements are way harsher than the statements of any of the scholars who were living in British India. These so-called hypocrite scholars were known to butter the government with sweet words.

Christian Clergy is Dajjal

If the Promised Messiah (AS) wanted to appease the government, he wouldn’t label the missionaries and spiritual fathers of the same government and their people as Dajjal. Dajjal is the name of Satan himself, and the biggest fitna (trial) that would unfold in the latter days.

Dajjal in fact is none other than the people known as Christian missionaries and European philosophers. They act like the two jaws of the Promised Dajjal with which he devours people’s faith like a python.

[Kitab-ul-Bariyyah, Ruhani Khaza’in, vol. 13, pp. 252-253, footnote]

British Government is Gog Magog

He also called the government to be Gog and Magog, another fitna of the latter days.

The first sign of the Latter Days will be the dominance of Gog and Magog, i.e. the influence of Russia and the British.

Christian Missionaries worship Satan

In response to the Shirk of Christians and the fitna of the Dajjal (Christian missionaries), Promised Messiah (AS) mentioned how they don’t worship God but Satan because the Christians are doing the opposite of what God has commanded.

The Christian clergies, however, have thrown the truth behind their backs, and whatever they have compiled is mere fabrication. All their efforts are focused on destroying Islam and erasing the signs of the greatest of human beings, our master, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafasas. Having set traps of idolatry, they invite people towards the blazing fire and abyss, claiming that the Messiah has combined in himself the mysteries of [both] Godhead and mortality. They only worship Satan. Those from the Muslims of this country who have accepted their religion and apostatised from the religion of our Master, the Best of Mankind, may peace and blessings of God be upon him, number around eighty-thousand.

Queen is in Darkness of Man-worship

Promised Messiah (AS) also wrote to the Queen of British Empire and invited her to Islam. In the same book, he mentions the severity of the sin she is indulged in and claims that she is in the ‘darkness of man-worship’.

If Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) wanted the favor from the government, why would he say such bitter truths? He should have acted the same way as the scholars of the time, who would use sweet words to gain favor of the government.

Jesus, the Messiah, is truly one of the very beloved and pious servants of God and is one of those who are the chosen people of God whom God purifies with His own Hand and keeps them under the shadow of His light. He is not God as has been conjectured, but has close relations with God and is among the perfect ones of which there are only a few.

Praised Kufr of British Government?

Lastly, some may ask that if Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) only wanted to praise the specific actions of the British government, he should have called them out on the Kufr they did as well?

That is correct. The Promised Messiah (AS) actually did that. He called their clergy Dajjal, their government Gog Magog and labelled them the biggest fitna since the creation Adam (AS). If that does not convince anyone, here is the direct quote of Ahmad (AS):

As for your repeated mention of the British government, it is absolutely true that we are grateful to the British government and are its well-wishers and will remain so as long as we live. However, we do not consider this government immune from error, nor do we consider its laws to be based on scholarly research.

[The Light of the Holy Quran, pg. 76]

There are many such instances but for brevity, we will leave it as is.

Conclusion

This allegation has been comprehensively refuted from all angles. Anti-Ahmadis rely on personal attacks—not evidence from Quran or Hadith. Just like non-Muslims attacked the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), they now attack Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS).
