Death of Dr. John Alexander Dowie
Introduction
In the early 1900s, an American preacher named Dr. John Alexander Dowie claimed to be the prophet Elijah (“Elijah the Restorer”). He built his own city, Zion City near Chicago, with thousands of followers and millions of dollars. From his pulpit, Dowie prayed daily for the total destruction of Islam.
Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) challenged Dowie to a public prayer duel (Mubahala): let both men pray to God that whoever is the liar dies in the lifetime of the truthful one.
Dowie accepted the duel on September 26, 1903, when he publicly addressed the challenge in his magazine, called Ahmad (AS) a “fly”, and boasted that he would crush him under his foot.
God answered the duel: 1. Dowie was 11 years younger than Ahmad (AS), a multi-millionaire, and a faith healer claiming complete immunity from disease. 2. Ahmad (AS) was older, chronically ill, and lived in a remote Indian village. 3. Within four years of entering the duel, Dowie suffered two paralytic strokes, lost Zion City, went bankrupt, was disowned by his family, and died in misery on March 9, 1907—while Ahmad (AS) lived on in victory.
1901 – Dowie Claims to be Elijah and Attacks Islam
John Alexander Dowie founded the theocratic city of Zion, Illinois, in 1901. He claimed to be the “Messenger of the Covenant” and the third coming of Elijah.
On June 2, 1901, Dowie declared himself “Elijah the Restorer” before thousands in Chicago. He claimed that God gave him the power to heal all diseases and that doctors were tools of the devil.
On September 6, 1902, Munsey’s Magazine wrote about Dowie’s massive fame:
“Alexander Dowie ranks with the outstanding personalities who founded a new city capable of housing a million people. A city, which its founder proposes to convert into a spiritual headquarters of the whole world.”

In his official weekly journal, Leaves of Healing, Dowie openly prayed for the destruction of all Muslims:
“Zion will have to wipe out that shocking blot upon humanity… May God help me to knock at the gate of the Moslem before long!”

He wrote further:
“It is time that the Moslem abomination was gone, bag and baggage as Mr. Gladstone used to say. Let it slink away back into the deserts of Arabia whence the filthy thing emerged… May God destroy it.”

September 1902 – Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) Challenges Dowie
When news of Dowie’s attacks reached Qadian, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) stepped forward to defend Islam.
In September 1902, Ahmad (AS) published his challenge in The Review of Religions (see the complete 1902 Challenge Text & Archival Scans):
“Whether the God of Muhammadans or the God of Dowie is the true God may be settled without the loss of millions of lives which Dr. Dowie’s prediction would involve… That method is that without threatening the Muhammadan public in general with destruction, he should choose me as his opponent and pray to God that of us two whoever is the liar may perish first.”

Ahmad (AS) pointed out the facts: * Dowie was 11 years younger than Ahmad (AS). * Dowie claimed divine vitality and wealth; Ahmad (AS) was elderly and suffered from chronic illnesses. * Death must not come through human violence, but directly through divine decree, such as disease, paralysis, or natural calamity.
June–August 1903 – American Press Reports the Challenge
In the summer of 1903, over 150 American and European newspapers published Ahmad (AS)’s challenge across the world.
The New York Commercial Advertiser reported in August 1903:
“Far, far away in India, comes a printed circular from Mirza Ghulam Ahmad who writes from Qadian in the Punjab. He has issued a challenge to Elijah III (Dowie)… In support of his claim, the Indian Messiah declares that when the Lord saw how badly things were being managed on earth, He raised him in the land of Punjab.”

On August 23, 1903, Ahmad (AS) issued a follow-up warning in The Review of Religions:
“If the pretender to Elijahship shows his willingness by any direct or indirect means to enter the lists against me, he shall leave the world before my eyes with great sorrow and torment… Though he may try as hard as he can to fly from the death which awaits him, yet his flight from such a contest will be nothing less than death to him, and calamity will certainly overtake his Zion.”

September 26, 1903 – Dowie Enters the Duel and Calls Ahmad (AS) a “Fly”
On September 26, 1903, Dowie publicly responded to the challenge in Leaves of Healing. He admitted receiving the letters from Qadian and accepted the duel through his boast:
“In India, there is a foolish Messiah who writes to me often telling me that the tomb of Jesus Christ is in Kashmir, and people sometimes say to me, why do you not reply to this, that or the other thing? Reply! Do you think that I shall reply to these gnats and flies. If I put my foot on them, I would crush out their lives. I give them a chance to fly away and live.”

By declaring to his followers that he would crush Ahmad (AS) under his foot, Dowie officially entered the prayer duel.
October 1903 – Dowie’s Collapse at Madison Square Garden
Just three weeks after boasting that he would crush Ahmad (AS), Dowie took 4,000 followers to New York City for a massive crusade at Madison Square Garden.
The crusade ended in total disaster: * Dowie lost control of his voice and stammered on stage. * The audience jeered, and thousands walked out during his speeches. * The New York Times reported on October 19, 1903: “THRONGS TURN FROM ENRAGED ‘ELIJAH III.’… Pleadings and Even Force Have No Effect on Thousands Who Decline to Wait for Dowie’s Preaching” [Scan]. * The New York Times reported on October 20, 1903: “HOSTILE AUDIENCE HOWLS AT DOWIE… During the scene of pandemonium the voice of Dowie died away, and he completely lost control of the audience” [Scan]. * The New York Times reported on October 24, 1903: “DOWIE LEAVES CITY AND MAY NOT RETURN… Restoration Host Disintegrating” [Part 1] [Part 2].
The failed crusade plunged Zion City into over $300,000 of debt.
1904 – Dowie’s Failed World Tour
In 1904, Dowie traveled to Australia, Germany, and England to regain his reputation. The tour was another failure: * In Australia, hotels refused to host him. * In Germany, the American Embassy refused to introduce him to Kaiser Wilhelm. * In England, public protests forced him to leave under police protection.
September–December 1905 – Dowie Struck by Paralysis
In September 1905, while preaching on stage in Zion, Dowie suddenly collapsed from a severe paralytic stroke.
In December 1905, a second stroke left him permanently crippled.
The man who claimed he could heal any disease by prayer and called doctors tools of Satan was now completely bedridden and had to be carried on a stretcher.
April 1906 – Zion Revolts and Deposes Dowie
While Dowie was in Mexico attempting to recover, his chief deputy, Wilbur Glenn Voliva, led a revolt in Zion City in April 1906: * Dowie was removed from leadership and excommunicated from his church. * Church audits revealed Dowie had stolen over $2.5 million and kept secret stashes of alcohol. * His wife, Jane Dowie, and his son, Gladstone Dowie, publicly deserted him. * Dowie was evicted from his home (Shiloh House) and left penniless.
February 20, 1907 – The Revelation of the “Great Victory”
On February 20, 1907, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) published a fresh revelation from God in Qadian:
“God has informed me: I will reveal a fresh sign which will be a great victory. This will be a sign for the whole world.”

March 9, 1907 – Dowie Dies in Disgrace while Ahmad (AS) Lives
Seventeen days later, on March 9, 1907, Dr. John Alexander Dowie died in Zion City at age 59.
He died paralyzed, penniless, deserted by his family, and mentally broken.
The news was telegraphed globally. Indian newspapers published the news immediately, including The Pioneer (Allahabad, March 11, 1907), The Civil and Military Gazette (Lahore, March 12, 1907), and The Indian Daily Telegraph (Lucknow, March 12, 1907).
Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS), living in good health at over 70 years of age, survived Dowie and witnessed the complete victory.
In May 1907, Hazrat Ahmad (AS) documented the fulfillment in his book Haqiqat-ul-Wahi:
ڈوئی کے بارے میں مَیں نے بار بار شائع کیا تھا کہ وہ میری زندگی میں ہی ہلاک ہو جائے گا اور وہ نہایت حسرت اور عذاب کے ساتھ مارا جائے گا چنانچہ ایسا ہی ہوا۔
“Regarding Dowie, I had repeatedly published that he would perish during my lifetime and would die in great sorrow and torment; and so it happened.”

American Newspapers Acknowledge the Victory
American newspapers recognized the exact fulfillment of the duel.
The Princeton Telegraph summarized Dowie’s fall on March 20, 1907 [Scan]:
“When John Alexander Dowie passed away, death ended the most spectacular and remarkable career that modern times have known. Gigantic successes and tragic failures punctuated his life. Here are some of the remarkable works and reversals that marked Dowie’s career:

- He built a city: he was exiled from it.
- He amassed a fortune of millions: he was reduced to virtual poverty.
- He elevated Voliva to great power: Voliva ruined him.
- He drew about him thousands who worshiped him: he died deserted by all save a handful of the faithful.”

In April 1907, The Review of Religions published its victory statement (see Ahmad’s (AS) 1907 Proclamation of Victory & Scans):
“In bringing disaster upon Dowie’s head and ultimately in his untimely death brought about with sorrow and torment, Almighty God has given His judgment exactly as He had informed His Messenger three or four years previous to these occurrences. It is a judgment which distinguishes the true Messenger of God from a false claimant, the true one from an impostor.”

The Living Sign: The Fath-e-Azeem Mosque in Zion (2022)
In October 2022, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (ABA), the Fifth Caliph of the Promised Messiah, traveled to Zion, Illinois.
His Holiness inaugurated the Fath-e-Azeem Mosque (“The Great Victory”) in Zion City. During the inauguration, the Mayor of Zion presented His Holiness with the key to the city. The city that Dowie founded to wipe out Islam is now home to an active Ahmadiyya mosque.

Conclusion
The prayer duel between Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) and John Alexander Dowie is a clear historical sign of the truth of Islam.
When Dowie prayed to destroy Islam, God answered through the Promised Messiah (AS). Dowie lost his health, wealth, city, family, and life. Today, Dowie’s church has disappeared, while the Fath-e-Azeem Mosque stands in Zion City as living proof of God’s victory.
