Explanation of Ahadith on Dajjal

Introduction

In the other articles, we explained who Ad-Dajjal is from the Holy Quran and Ahadith. In this article, we will explain what the descriptions/actions of Dajjal mean.

Kafir will be read by any believer (Momin), literate or illiterate

“… between his eyes is written “disbeliever” (كَافِرٌ) which every believer will read, whether he is literate or illiterate.”
[Sahih Muslim 2934b]

Ad-Dajjal will have Kafir written on his forehead but only those who are true Muslims (Momin) can read it. It proves that identifying Ad-Dajjal will be extremely easy since something written on the forehead is an idiom used for it.

The second statement proves that to identify him, one has to be a believer (Momin). It does not say a Muslim but a Momin as anyone can become a Muslim but a believer is a step above it. This is proven true by another hadith of the Prophet (SAW) where he fears his Ummah will not be able to recognize Ad-Dajjal:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: I have told you so much about the Dajjal (Antichrist) that I am afraid you may not understand.
[Sunan Abi Dawud 4320]

This is further supported by another hadith where Ad-Dajjal is described as the biggest fitnah ever. It is only possible since the majority of the population will be deceived by him and would not be able to recognize him.

There would be no creation (creating more trouble) than the Dajjal right from the creation of Adam to the Last Hour.
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2946]

Paradise and Hell with Dajjal

الدَّجَّالُ أَعْوَرُ الْعَيْنِ الْيُسْرَى جُفَالُ الشَّعَرِ مَعَهُ جَنَّةٌ وَنَارٌ فَنَارُهُ جَنَّةٌ وَجَنَّتُهُ نَارٌ

“Dajjal is blind of left eye with thick hair and there would be a garden and fire with him and his fire would be a garden and his garden would be fire.”
[Sahih Muslim 2934b]

The ahadith tell us that Ad-Dajjal will deceive people by showing them Hell and Paradise. What seems like Hell, is actually a paradise, and what seems like Paradise. This act of making flipping good and evil is a tactic of Satan, which the Holy Quran even confirms.¹

It further means that whoever will follow the Dajjal will be able to lead a luxurious life, and whoever will be opposed to him will find worldly provisions withheld from him. This is a paradise for superficial observers, but it is spoken of as being hell, in reality, for whoever gets engrossed in the enjoyments of this life such as dancing, amusements, indiscriminate mixing of the two sexes, drinking, gambling, adultery, cannot be expected to have any thought of God. As a result, he is deprived of spiritual benefits which is really a hell, and which though hidden from the physical eye of a man in this life will become manifest in the hereafter.

Abundance of Food and Water

قُلْتُ لأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ مَعَهُ جَبَلَ خُبْزٍ وَنَهَرَ مَاءٍ

“Because the people say that he will have a mountain of bread and a river of water with him.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 7122]

This proves that Ad-Dajjal will be in control of the provisions of livelihood, comfort, and luxury. Thus, anyone who agrees with Ad-Dajjal will be given those comforts and whoever disagrees will have their provisions taken away. This lack of resources and provisions is a form of Hell in this life.

This is what the Christian nations did and continue to do even today. They restrict money and resources for those nations that go against them while allowing aid to the poor allied countries. This is further supported by the following hadith:

“He would then come to another people and invite them. But they would reject him and he would go away from them and there would be drought for them and nothing would be left with them in the form of wealth.”
[Sahih Muslim 2937a]

Travel extremely fast through the earth

We said: Allah’s Messenger, how quickly would he walk upon the earth? Thereupon he (ﷺ) said: Like cloud driven by the wind.
[Sahih Muslim 2937a]

يخرج الدجال في خفقة من الدين وإدبار من العلم فله أربعون

“…He will be riding a donkey which will have a span of 40 cubits between its two ears..”
[Musnad Ahmad, vol. 3 pg. 367]

This is a grand prophecy of the Holy Prophet (SAW) that was fulfilled within our lifetimes. It mentions modern-day transport and how Ad-Dajjal will use it to travel quickly across the world. The donkey of Dajjal is actually a reference to airplanes and trains.

Travel to every city except Mecca and Medina

لَيْسَ مِنْ بَلَدٍ إِلاَّ سَيَطَؤُهُ الدَّجَّالُ إِلاَّ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةَ

“There will be no land which would not be covered by the Dajjal but Mecca and Medina”
[Sahih Muslim 2943a]

The fitnah of Ad-Dajjal will be spread across the world except for Mecca and Medinah. What was the fitnah? It was the widespread missionary work of Christians across the world. Wherever the British went, the missionaries were used as pawns. This indeed happened and we see that the Holy cities of Meccan and Medinah remained safe from this fitnah.

Extract treasures from wastelands

“He would then walk through the waste land and say to it: Bring forth your treasures, and the treasures would come out and collect (themselves) before him like the swarm of bees.”
[Sahih Muslim 2937a]

This refers to the mining of treasures from the wastelands. The Christian nations were able to discover oil (Black gold) which has made the Arab nations extremely rich over the past century.

Command the sky to rain and grow crops

“He would then give command to the sky and there would be rainfall upon the earth and it would grow crops.”
[Sahih Muslim 2937a]

This refers to the technological achievements of the Christian nations and how they will be able to do artificial rain. This concept is called “Cloud seeding“:

Cloud seeding is a weather modification technique that improves a cloud’s ability to produce rain or snow by introducing tiny ice nuclei into certain types of subfreezing clouds.

Make animals produce more produce

“Then in the evening, their pasturing animals would come to them with their humps very high and their udders full of milk and their flanks stretched.”
[Sahih Muslim 2937a]

This refers to the technological advancements in agriculture and how the Christian nations have been able to increase the food production of cattle through hormones. The sizes of animals are bigger, have more meat, and produce more milk than ever.

Revive dead people

“He would then call a person brimming with youth and strike him with the sword and cut him into two pieces and (make these pieces lie at a distance which is generally) between the archer and his target. He would then call (that young man) and he will come forward laughing with his face gleaming (with happiness)”
[Sahih Muslim 2937a]

This refers to the technological advancements in healthcare and how Western nations are trying their best to gain superiority over nature. They can literally cut people open and stitch them up. Many of the deadly diseases have been eradicated and humans live longer than ever.²

Blind in the right eye

Ad- Dajjal is blind in the right eye
[Sahih al-Bukhari 7407]

The word ‘one-eyed’ is not to be taken literally. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an “Whoever is blind in this world will be blind in the hereafter.”³ Blindness here evidently means spiritual blindness. Thus, the word under discussion will mean that Dajjal will have no spiritual sight (right eye), although his worldly sight (left eye) will be very sharp.

Promised Messiah (AS) has explained this similarly:

اس جگہ نا بینائی سے مراد جسمانی نابینائی ہے بلکہ روحانی نا بینائی مراد ہے اور مطلب یہ ہے کہ دجال میں دینی عقل نہیں ہوگی اور گودنیا کی عقل اس میں تیز ہوگی اور ایسی حکمتیں ایجاد کرے گا اور ایسے عجیب کام دکھلائے گا کہ گویا خدائی کا دعوی کر رہا ہے لیکن دین کی آنکھ بالکل نہیں ہوگی۔ جیسے آج کل یورپ اور امریکہ کے لوگوں کا حال ہے کہ دنیا کی تدبیروں کا انہوں نے خاتمہ کر دیا ہے۔

In this instance, the blindness does not refer to physical blindness but the spiritual blindness and the it means that Ad-Dajjal won’t have spiritual sight. He will be smart in the materialistic aspect and will invent such and will do such unexpected things like he is claiming divinity but he will be devoid of spiritual sight.

Emergence from the East

الدَّجَّالَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ أَرْضٍ بِالْمَشْرِقِ

“The Dajjal will emerge from a land in the east called Khurasan”
[Musnad Ahmad 12]

Dajjal is mentioned to emerge from the East. In the hadith of Tamim Ad-Dari, the same is mentioned.⁴ This is completely in line with the ahadith that mention the coming of the Messiah. The ahadith also mention that the Messiah will descend in the East or the East of Damascus. As Ad-Dajjal is mentioned to emerge in the east, the Messiah who is supposed to kill him will also be sent in the same place.

The Promised Messiah (AS) explains the same:

ممالک مشرقیہ سے مراد ملک فارس اور نجد اور ملک ہندوستان ہے کیونکہ یہ سب ممالک زمین حجاز سے مشرق کی طرف ہی واقع ہیں اور ضرور تھا کہ حسب پیشگوئی رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کفر اور کا فری انہیں جگہوں سے قوت کے ساتھ اپنا جلوہ دکھاوے انہیں ممالک میں سے کسی جگہ دجال خروج کرے اور انہیں میں مسیح بھی نازل ہو کیونکہ جو جگہ محل کفر اور فتن ہو جائے وہی جگہ صلاح اور ایمان کی بنا ڈالنے کے لئے مقرر ہونی چاہیے سو ان ممالک مشرقیہ میں سے ملک ہند جیسا زیادہ تر محل کفر اور فتن اور نفاق اور بغض اور کینہ ہو گیا ہے ۔

The Dajjal appearing from the East (“Mashrik”) means that he will appear from the lands of Faris, Najad and Hindustan (Persia – present-day Iran, the Arabian Peninsula and the Indo-Pak sub-continent), and out of these Hindustan was the most appropriate because of its fallen moral state.

Most followers will be Jews

يَتْبَعُ الدَّجَّالَ مِنْ يَهُودِ أَصْبَهَانَ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفًا عَلَيْهِمُ الطَّيَالِسَةُ

“The Dajjal would be followed by seventy thousand Jews of Isfahan wearing Persian shawls.”
[Sahih Muslim 2944]

The rejectors of Messiah will follow Ad-Dajjal and are called Jews. Just like the Jews rejected the Messiah, Isa (AS), similarly, those who reject the Messiah sent to the Muslims will also be called the same.

It is also a prophecy that a majority will reject the Messiah. This is also found in the Holy Quran and other ahadith.

The reference to Isfahan and Persian shawls shows that Ad-Dajjal and Messiah will be sent to the East as explained in the above section.
