It is a prevalent belief amongst the non-Ahmadi Muslims, especially the ‘Sunnis’, that when the Messiah comes, he will fight Gog and Magog through supernatural powers granted to him by Allah the Almighty. This is not only shirk but goes against the true prophecy of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Gog and Magog Cannot be Fought by Anyone
The Holy Prophet (SAW) clearly stated that in the latter days, Gog and Magog would gain such dominance that no worldly power would be able to resist them, not even the Messiah or Mahdi (AS). This is described in the Hadith below:
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Jabir with the same chain of transmitters but with this addition that Gog and Magog would walk until they would reach the mountain of al-Khamar and it is a mountain of Bait-ul-Maqdis and they would say:
“We have killed those who are upon the earth. Let us now kill those who are In the sky and they would throw their arrows towards the sky and the arrows would return to them besmeared with blood. And in the narration of Ibn Hujr (the words are):” I have sent such persons (Gog and Magog) that none would dare fight against them.“
But the Prophet (SAW) did not leave us hopeless. He also told us the exact remedy the Messiah would use, and would teach his Jama’ah to use as well: taking his people to the mountains and turning completely to Allah in prayer. According to the Prophet (SAW), these were the only remedies that would work against the massive influence of Gog and Magog in the latter times. This is described in the Ahadith below:
“[…] He will then search for Dajjal until he will catch hold of him at the gate of Ludd (village near Jerusalem), and will kill him. Then the people, whom Allah will have protected, will come to `Isa son of Maryam, and he will wipe their faces and will inform them of their ranks in Jannah, and it will be under such conditions that Allah will reveal to `Isa these words: `I have brought forth from amongst my slaves such people against whom none will be able to fight, so take these people safely to the mountain […]” [Riyad as-Salihin 1808]
“Allah would send a revelation to [the Promised] Jesus (AS) that, ‘I have brought forth such people, against whom no one has the power to fight; so you take my people safely to the mount Tur (Sinai). Then Allah would send Gog and Magog and they would hasten forth from every height…”
Allah SWT instructing the Messiah to “seek shelter on a mountain” is not to be taken literally. Rather, it is a metaphor which emphasizes the following:
detachment from material fears
reliance solely upon Allah
Thus taken together, this means that the Messiah will lead his community to higher, God-centered moral ground. The Messiah will protect the true believers through spiritual strength, not by material means. Furthermore, this hadith most clearly signifies that no one will have the power to make an outward contest with Gog and Magog. This is something that the Muslims believe in – a fairy tale that the Messiah and Mahdi will wage war against Gog and Magog. However, as we can see, this is not what the Hadith implies.
The Promised Messiah will then be instructed through revelation to take refuge at mount Tur with his Jama’ah, i.e. worship and prayers will be brought to attention, and it is through prayer and heavenly signs that the Jama’ah of the Promised Messiah will ideologically conquer these powerful nations and spread its message.
Hadith Explained by Khalifatul Masih IV (RH)
Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (RH), 4th Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community explains this eloquently below:
“The Holy Prophet, referring to the latter days, prophesied Gog and Magog will rule the world and they will rise wave after wave and the whole world will be overwhelmed by the waves of their power. At that time the Messiah will be raised in the world and the Messiah with his followers will try to fight them, and will attempt to counter them. Allah will then speak to the Messiah saying: that no man in the world has been granted the power to fight these two nations which We have created – not even you! There is only one way, that you seek shelter on a mountain and pray to God.It is only the weapon of prayer that can subjugate these nations.” [The Gulf Crisis and New World Order, Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, pp.68-69]
What does the Mountain Represent?
Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (RH) explains in the very next section of the book, titled “The Jamaat of the Muhammadan Messiah and Its Responsibilities,” that the mountain mentioned in the prophecy should not be understood solely as a physical mountain. Rather, it represents the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the lofty teachings, character, and example that he brought.
A summary of his explanation is presented below in bullet points:
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is the spiritual mountain to which the believers are instructed to seek refuge. Just as a mountain provides protection and strength, believers find spiritual strength by returning to the teachings and example of the Holy Prophet (SAW).
The prophecy therefore instructs the believers to take refuge in the teachings of Islam and then turn to Allah through prayer. Prayers offered while following the lofty principles of the Holy Prophet (SAW) will receive Divine support.
This responsibility falls particularly upon the Jama’at of the Promised Messiah (AS). The prophecy indicates that, when worldly powers fail and people lose faith in prayer, the Messiah’s Community will remind the world that prayer is the true means of seeking Allah’s help.
The purpose is not simply to protect Ahmadis from worldly difficulties, but to revive the spiritual strength of the Muslim Ummah by bringing people back to Allah and the example of the Holy Prophet (SAW).
Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (RH) emphasizes that Ahmadis should continue praying persistently, particularly during periods of worldwide turmoil, because there is ultimately no lasting solution to the world’s spiritual and moral problems without turning to Allah.
The condition for this Divine help is that the Community must seek refuge in the spiritual eminence of the Holy Prophet (SAW) and strive to follow his teachings, character, and noble example.
Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS): Prayers are the only solution against Gog and Magog
In his commentary on specific verses of the Holy Quran, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS), the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, expands on several verses of Surah Al-Anbiyaa which pertain to the coming of Gog and Magog and state of latter days. He expounds on this verse below:
“It shall be so even when Gog and Magog are let loose and they shall hasten forth from every height.” [Quran 21:97]
Ahmad (AS) explains in his commentary that the latter days will be the time when Ad-Dajjal and Gog and Magog will be rampant on Earth and will be responsible for various immoralities and sins present on the Earth. He explains that the coming of the Messiah is assosciated with Ad-Dajjal and Gog and Magog. However, Ahmad (AS) clearly states that based on Quran and Ahadith, the Messiah will use the power of prayer only to defeat the enemies of God.
Because the definition of Gog and Magog as described the Ahadith is that no one will be able to compete with them in a fight and that the Promised Messiah will only utilize [the power/weapon of] prayer.“
Following the Messiah’s Teaching: The Khulafa and the Weapon of Prayer
Just as the Promised Messiah (AS) emphasized that prayer is the only means through which believers can overcome Gog and Magog, all the Khulafa-e-Ahmadiyyat have followed his teachings and repeatedly urged the Jama’at to pray fervently and sharpen their weapon of prayer. Prayer is the only weapon possessed by the heavenly Jama’at of Allah, and it is through this weapon that Divine help and protection are sought.
Although the Khulafa have emphasized the importance of prayer repeatedly in their lectures, sermons, and books, one excerpt from each Khalifa will be presented below to highlight this emphasis.
Khalifatul Masih I (RA)
When Hazrat Hakim Maulwi Nooruddin (RA) was seriously ill in 1911, one of his final messages to the Jama’at was to sharpen the weapon of prayer, as others had abandoned it:
“[…] That is the weapon of prayer which the whole world has abandoned. Among Muslims, our community should intensify this work and make use of it. As far as possible for them, they should offer prayers and not grow weary. I am so ill that it cannot even be conceived how much of my life is left; therefore, this is my final testament/will to the Jama’at: along with La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah), sharpen the weapon of prayer.”
During his 52 years of Khilafat, no Khalifa was as emphatic in urging the Jama’at to pray as the Promised Son (RA). He repeatedly reminded the Jama’at that prayer is the only means of success and urged them to pray as it is the only means that the Jama’at of the Messiah will successfully defeat Satanic forces of the modern world. He gave several lectures on this – one of his lectures is linked below.
تمہارے پاس صرف دعا کا ہتھیار ہے۔ سو تم اپنے لیے، سلسلہ کے لیے اور تمام بنی نوع انسان کے لیے خوب دعا ئیں کرو
Lecture Title: “You only have the weapon of prayer, so pray for yourself, for your loved ones, and for all of humanity.”
Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad (RH) that only through the weapon of prayer can Ahmadis pull the world from evils to the fountain of life:
“[…] But as I said, we do not have external supplies/resources; we have only one thing, the only weapon that has been given to us, and that weapon is mighty. The world cannot compete with it, and that is the weapon of prayer. So this is the weapon that was given to us, and its quality and nature were explained to us, and a certainty in prayer was granted to us, and God has said that although the task is difficult, it must happen. Because humanity at this time is passing through a delicate/critical period, and this task is entrusted to you, but I will not give you supplies, yes, I give you the weapon of prayer. So through prayer, draw/pull the world to the fountain of life […]”
The view of Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (RH) is presented above.
Khalifatul Masih V (ABA)
Like all the previous Khulafa, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (ATBA) has repeatedly emphasized that the Promised Messiah’s (AS) victory over satanic forces depends upon prayer. An excerpt is presented below:
“May Allah grant us the ability to fulfill this mission which the Promised Messiah, peace and blessings be upon him, brought —which is to bring the world under the banner of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. For this purpose, utilize all your capabilities and efforts, and pray to the utmost limit, because the dominance of the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, is destined to happen through prayers. You have been given the weapon of prayer […]” [Khutbat-e-Masroor, Volume 15, p. 315-316 (Friday Sermon delivered on June 30, 2017)]
Furthermore, in the Friday Sermon of August 23, 2024, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V (ABA, based on a previous vision of Khalifatul Masih III| (RH), instructed the Jama’at to recite certain prayers everyday explaining that through these prayers, believers will be safeguarded in a secure fortress against Satan.
His Holiness (aba) said that he wished to make an appeal; the Third Caliph (rh) saw a vision in which an elder said to him that every adult in the Community should recite Durood Sharif [prayer for invoking salutations upon the Holy Prophet (sa)] SubhanAllahi wa bi Hamdihi SubhanAllahil Azeem Allahumma Salle ala Muhammadin wa aali Muhammad (Holy is Allah and worthy of all praise, Holy is Allah the Great, O Allah bestow Thy blessings upon Muhammad and the people of Muhammad) 200 times. Those who are 15-25 years of age recite it at least 100 times, and if children recite it at least 33 times and parents help their infant children recite it at least three to four times. Then recite Astaghfiruallha Rabbi Min Kulli Zanbinwwa Atubu Ilaih (I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for all my sins and turn to Him)100 times. His Holiness (aba) said that he would also include the prayer Rabbi Kullu Shay’in Khadimuka Rabbi Fahfazni Wansurni Warhamni (My Lord everything is subservient to You; My Lord protect me, help me and have mercy on me) to be recited not just in these days but generally as well.
According to the vision of the Third Caliph (rh), the elder said that if these were recited then you will become safeguarded in a secure fortress, impenetrable by Satan, made with iron walls reaching the heavens.
His Holiness (aba) said that these days when Satan is trying to attack our Community and the world at large, the only way for us to remain safeguarded is through prayers. Hence, we should recite these prayers, not just during the days of Jalsa but throughout the year.
Conclusion
Gog and Magog cannot be defeated through worldly power; the Holy Prophet (sa) taught that the Messiah’s refuge would be in Allah and prayer.
The Promised Messiah (as) identified prayer as the weapon through which his Community would overcome these powerful forces.
His Khulafa have continued to emphasize this same teaching, repeatedly reminding the Jama’at that our strength and success depend upon sincere, fervent prayer.
