Where Is Allah? Was Jesus Raised to Allah?

Introduction

Non-Ahmadi Muslims have only one single vague verse in the entire Quran to claim that Prophet Isa (AS) is alive in heaven: Quran 4:158.

They cling to one single word: Rafa.

They claim this word proves Isa (AS) flew up into the clouds and is sitting alive in outer space. But Rafa does not mean to fly to the skies, and it does not mean to stay alive.

Here is the universal rule:

Rafa is an Arabic verb that means to raise or elevate. When Allah raises (Rafa’a) humans, He only raises their souls. Never their bodies.

Look at what the verse actually says:

بَل رَّفَعَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا

“Nay, Allah raised him to Himself; and Allah is Mighty, Wise.”

[Quran 4:158]

Ask them a simple question: How does being raised to Allah mean being alive in the sky?

The verse says Allah raised him “to Himself” (Ilayh). Where does the Quran mention flying? Where does it mention the sky? Where does it say he stayed alive for thousands of years?

They have zero proof. They insert their own physical assumptions into the text.

First Challenge: The Linguistic Rule

First of all, show even one instance in the Arabic language, the Holy Quran, or the Hadith where Allah performs Rafa of a living human and it means raising their physical body.

You cannot show even once.

Whenever Allah raises a human being, it refers exclusively to raising their soul in spiritual status, honor, and closeness. It never means lifting flesh and bones into the clouds.

The burden of proof is completely on them. If they cannot produce a single linguistic example from the Quran or Sunnah, their physical claim collapses.

Second Challenge: Where Is Allah? The Dilemma

If non-Ahmadis still claim that Isa (AS) was physically raised “to Allah,” then ask them: Where is Allah?

Every Muslim scholar falls into one of two theological camps regarding the nature and direction of Allah. In both camps, claiming that Jesus flew to God creates an impossible contradiction.

Camp 1: The Majority of Muslims (Ash’aris, Maturidis, and Traditional Sunnis)

The vast majority of Sunnis believe that Allah does not have a physical direction, body, or place.

So we ask them: – If Allah has no physical direction or location, where was Isa (AS) raised to? – Flying up into the sky is not flying to Allah! – You cannot physically travel toward someone who has no physical location!

If Allah has no physical place, then a physical journey into the clouds can never bring a human physically closer to Allah. The moment you say Isa (AS) traveled physically “to Allah,” you contradict your own creed.

Camp 2: The Minority Group (Salafis)

The Salafi school takes a literalist approach. They claim that Allah is in an upward direction, physically above the Throne (Arsh).

If this is their belief, they face an equally devastating problem: – If Isa (AS) literally flew up to God, he must be above the Throne where Allah is! – Why do you claim he is in the second heaven?

During the Mi’raj (Night Journey), Prophet Muhammad ﷺ met Isa (AS) in the second heaven, far below the seventh heaven, and infinitely below the Throne of Allah.

If Allah raised Isa (AS) “to Himself,” why was he left in the second heaven below the seven heavens, far away from the Throne?

By their own logic, Isa (AS) never reached Allah. Their literalist interpretation contradicts their own Hadith narrative.

Conclusion

Both groups end up contradicting their own core beliefs about Allah: – Traditional Sunnis destroy their own creed by giving Allah a physical direction in the sky. – Salafis destroy their own argument by trapping Isa (AS) in the second heaven, far away from the Throne.

“Raised him to Himself” (Rafa) never meant physical flight.

The historical context explains the verse perfectly. The opponents of Jesus claimed they killed him on the cross. Under Jewish law, anyone hung on a tree dies an accursed death, rejected by God.

Allah directly destroyed this false claim in Quran 4:158. Allah announced that instead of dying an accursed death on the cross, Isa (AS) had his soul raised to Allah in spiritual status, honor, and closeness. His prophetic honor was completely vindicated.

Summary and Key Takeaways

  • Only One Vague Verse: Non-Ahmadi Muslims rely entirely on Quran 4:158 and the single word Rafa to claim Isa (AS) is alive.
  • The Golden Rule: When Allah raises (Rafa) a human, He only raises their soul and spiritual rank, never their physical body.
  • No Sky in the Text: Quran 4:158 states Allah raised him “to Himself” (Ilayh), not “to the sky” (ila al-samaa).
  • The Sunni Dilemma: Traditional Sunnis believe Allah has no physical location, so physical flight cannot bring anyone closer to God.
  • The Salafi Dilemma: Salafis claim Allah is above the Throne, yet their own Hadiths place Isa (AS) in the second heaven.
  • The True Meaning: Rafa refutes the curse of the cross by confirming the spiritual elevation and noble status of Isa (AS) near Allah.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Rafa mean physical ascension in Quran 4:158?

No. In the Arabic language, the Quran, and Hadith, when Allah performs Rafa on a human being, it always means spiritual elevation, status, and honor. It never means lifting a physical human body into the sky.

Does Quran 4:158 mention Isa (AS) going to the sky?

No. The verse explicitly states Bal Rafa’ahullahu Ilayh (“Allah raised him to Himself”). It never mentions the sky (al-samaa), clouds, or outer space.

If Allah has no physical direction, how could Isa (AS) fly to Him?

He could not. For traditional Sunnis (Ash’aris and Maturidis) who believe Allah exists without a place or physical direction, claiming a physical body flew toward Allah is an impossible theological contradiction.

Why do Salafis face a contradiction regarding the second heaven?

Salafis argue Allah is above the Throne (Arsh). Yet Hadith reports state Isa (AS) was seen in the second heaven during Mi’raj. If he was raised “to Allah,” leaving him in the second heaven far away from the Throne contradicts their claim of physical ascension to God.

Why did Allah use the word Rafa in Quran 4:158?

The opponents of Isa (AS) claimed he died an accursed death on the cross. Allah used Rafa to prove that Isa (AS) was saved from a cursed death and exalted in spiritual honor and closeness to Allah.
