Tawaffa vs Tuwaffa: Active and Passive Meaning in Arabic
Introduction
Tawaffa is an Arabic verb that means to take something. When Allah takes (does Tawaffi of) a human, it ONLY means taking of the soul.
It never means the taking of the body & soul.
Non-Ahmadi debaters frequently confuse two distinct Arabic grammatical forms: Tawaffā (تَوَفَّى) and Tuwuffiya (تُوُفِّيَ, often colloquially written as Tuwaffa).
Some claim that because one is active and the other is passive, their theological meanings must be completely different. This argument is rooted in basic ignorance of Arabic grammar. Both forms refer strictly to death and the taking of the soul.
The Grammatical Distinction
In Arabic grammar, the difference between these two words is simply a matter of active versus passive voice:
- Active Voice (Tawaffā — تَوَفَّى): This is the active verb meaning “He took the soul” or “He caused to die.” The Actor is Allah. When Allah causes a human being to die, He does Tawaffā.
- Passive Voice (Tuwuffiya — تُوُفِّيَ): This is the passive verb meaning “He was caused to die” or “He passed away.” The person who dies undergoes Tuwuffiya.
In classical Arabic, you never say Tawaffā Zayd to mean “Zayd died.” Zayd did not take his own soul! Instead, classical Arabs say Tuwuffiya Zayd (“Zayd was caused to die”).
Allah alone is Al-Mutawaffī (the One who causes death), and the human being is Al-Mutawaffā (the one whose soul is taken).
The Rule in Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:55)
In Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:55), Allah addresses Isa (AS):
إِذْ قَالَ اللَّهُ يَا عِيسَىٰ إِنِّي مُتَوَفِّيكَ وَرَافِعُكَ إِلَيَّ
“When Allah said: O Isa, I will cause you to die [Mutawaffīka] and will exalt you to Myself.”
[Quran 3:55]
The word Mutawaffīka is the active participle (Ism Fā‘il) derived from Tawaffā. Allah Himself is the Actor. He is informing Isa (AS) that He will take his soul and cause him to die a natural death.
Neither the active form (Tawaffā) nor the passive form (Tuwuffiya) ever means physical bodily ascension into heaven.
There is zero verse in the Holy Quran, zero Hadith, and zero Arabic dictionary where either form means lifting flesh and bones into the sky.
