Hadith: “Whoever Changes His Religion, Kill Him” Explained
Introduction
Many critics quote a single Hadith to claim that Islam executes anyone who leaves the faith:
مَنْ بَدَّلَ دِينَهُ فَاقْتُلُوهُ
“Whoever changes his religion, kill him.“
[Sahih al-Bukhari 6922]
This claim is completely false.
The Holy Quran contains zero verses prescribing the death penalty for apostasy, and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never executed anyone for leaving Islam.
Furthermore, if you take this statement literally without context, it creates an immediate absurdity. It does not say “whoever leaves Islam.” It says “whoever changes his religion”—which taken literally would mean executing non-Muslims who convert to Islam!
The statement was never an unconditional decree against personal faith.

What did Prophet Muhammad ﷺ actually mean?
Other authentic Hadiths explain this statement clearly. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Abu Qilaba clarifies:
وَاللَّهِ مَا قَتَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَحَدًا قَطُّ إِلاَّ فِي إِحْدَى ثَلاَثِ خِصَالٍ رَجُلٌ قَتَلَ بِجِنَايَةِ نَفْسٍ فَقُتِلَ، أَوْ رَجُلٌ زَنَى بَعْدَ إِحْصَانٍ، أَوْ رَجُلٌ حَارَبَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَارْتَدَّ عَنِ الإِسْلاَمِ
Narrated Abu Qilaba:
“By Allah, Allah’s Messenger ﷺ never killed anyone except in one of the following three situations:

- A person who killed somebody unjustly (in Qisas).
- A married person who committed illegal sexual intercourse.
- A man who fought against Allah and His Apostle and deserted Islam and became an apostate.“
In Sunan an-Nasa’i, Hazrat Aisha (RA) confirms:
لاَ يَحِلُّ دَمُ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ إِلاَّ فِي إِحْدَى ثَلاَثِ حُرَمٍ زَانٍ بَعْدَ إِحْصَانٍ فَعَلَيْهِ الرَّجْمُ أَوْ رَجُلٌ قَتَلَ رَجُلاً مُتَعَمِّدًا فَعَلَيْهِ الْقَتْلُ أَوْ رَجُلٌ خَرَجَ مِنَ الإِسْلاَمِ يُحَارِبُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَرَسُولَهُ يُقْتَلُ أَوْ يُصْلَبُ أَوْ يُنْفَى مِنَ الأَرْضِ
Narrated Aisha (RA):
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘It is not permissible to shed the blood of a Muslim except in three cases: An adulterer who had been married… a man who killed another man intentionally… and a man who left Islam and waged war against Allah, the Might and Sublime, and His Messenger, who should be killed, or crucified, or banished from the land.‘”

These narrations clarify the entire issue.
The Hadith is not talking about private personal belief. It refers strictly to apostasy combined with rebellion and treason—leaving the community to physically wage war against the Muslims.
What Was the Example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?
When people left Islam peacefully without committing treason, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never harmed them:
- The Bedouin in Medina: A Bedouin came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ three times publicly demanding to revoke his pledge of Islam (“Cancel my pledge”). The Prophet ﷺ refused to release him spiritually, but let him walk out of Medina completely unharmed [Sahih al-Bukhari 7322].
- The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ formally signed a treaty agreeing that any Muslim who left Islam and returned to the Meccan pagans would not be pursued or harmed [Sahih al-Bukhari 2700].
If “Whoever changes his religion, kill him” meant killing every apostate, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would never have let apostates walk away safely.
