Is Dajjal Satan?

Introduction

Non-Ahmadis believe that Dajjal is not mentioned in the Quran.

However, we Ahmadis believe that the Quran is a complete book and mentions him clearly.

This is especially true because Ahadith describe Dajjal as the biggest fitnah ever created since Adam (AS), and every single prophet warned his people about him. How could Allah reveal a complete book of guidance and ignore the biggest trial Muslims would ever face?

The truth is simple: the Quran does mention Dajjal. The Quran reveals that Dajjal is actually a manifestation of Satan.

Satan – The Deceiver

Lexically, the word Dajjal refers to someone who deceives, lies, and covers truth with falsehood.

The Holy Quran calls Satan the biggest deceiver: Al-Gharoor.

“O ye men, assuredly the promise of Allah is true, so let not the present life deceive you, nor let the Deceiver deceive you with respect to Allah.”

[Holy Quran 35:5]

Allah repeats this exact same warning in Surah Luqman:

فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّکُمُ الۡحَیٰوۃُ الدُّنۡیَا ٝ وَلَا یَغُرَّنَّکُمۡ بِاللّٰہِ الۡغَرُوۡرُ

“So let not worldly life beguile you, nor let the Deceiver deceive you concerning Allah.”

[Holy Quran 31:33]

Just as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned that Dajjal is the great deceiver, the Holy Quran calls Satan Al-Gharoor (the Deceiver).

Every Prophet Warned About Dajjal

The Quran tells us that every prophet warned his people about Satan. Ahadith confirm that these exact same prophets warned their people about Dajjal.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said about Dajjal:

إِنِّي لأُنْذِرُكُمُوهُ وَمَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ إِلاَّ قَدْ أَنْذَرَهُ قَوْمَهُ، لَقَدْ أَنْذَرَ نُوحٌ قَوْمَهُ

“I warn you against him (i.e. the Dajjal) and there was no prophet but warned his nation against him. No doubt, Noah warned his nation against him.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari 3337]

Now see what the Holy Quran says about every prophet:

وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِیۡ کُلِّ اُمَّۃٍ رَّسُوۡلًا اَنِ اعۡبُدُوا اللّٰہَ وَاجۡتَنِبُوا الطَّاغُوۡتَ

“And We did raise among every people a Messenger, preaching: ‘Worship Allah and shun the Evil One [Taghut/Satan]…'”

[Holy Quran 16:36]

If Dajjal and Satan were two completely different entities, the Quran and Hadith would contradict each other. But they agree: every prophet warned against Satan, who reaches his peak deception in the latter days as Dajjal.

Satan Flips Good and Evil

Ahadith tell us that Dajjal will deceive people by showing them Hell and Paradise. What seems like Hell is actually Paradise, and what seems like Paradise is actually Hell:

الدَّجَّالُ أَعْوَرُ الْعَيْنِ الْيُسْرَى جُفَالُ الشَّعَرِ مَعَهُ جَنَّةٌ وَنَارٌ فَنَارُهُ جَنَّةٌ وَجَنَّتُهُ نَارٌ

“Dajjal is blind of left eye with thick hair and there would be a garden and fire with him and his fire would be a garden and his garden would be fire.”

[Sahih Muslim 2934a]

This act of flipping good and evil is the exact tactic of Satan:

تَاللّٰہِ لَقَدۡ اَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ اِلٰۤی اُمَمٍ مِّنۡ قَبۡلِکَ فَزَیَّنَ لَہُمُ الشَّیۡطٰنُ اَعۡمَالَہُمۡ

“By Allah, We did send Messengers to the peoples before thee; but Satan made their works appear beautiful to them…”

[Holy Quran 16:63]

What seems like paradise with Dajjal—worldly luxuries, godless freedom, and materialism—is actually spiritual fire. What seems like fire—submitting to God, praying, and self-restraint—is true paradise.

Dajjal and Satan Lead People Astray

Ahadith describe that Dajjal will lead people astray and make evil deeds appear good.

The Holy Quran mentions this as the direct promise of Satan:

وَلَاُضِلَّنَّہُمۡ وَلَاُمَنِّیَنَّہُمۡ

“‘And assuredly I will lead them astray and assuredly I will excite in them vain desires…'”

[Holy Quran 4:119]

Dajjal does not have magical powers. His whole deception is the fulfillment of Satan’s promise to lead humans away from Allah through vain desires.

Salaf: Dajjal is Satan

This is not a new claim invented by Ahmadis. Early scholars of the Salaf said the exact same thing.

Hafiz Nu’aim ibn Hammad (the teacher of Imam Bukhari) recorded the view of the companion Miqdam ibn Ma’dikarib (RA) and his students:

لَيْسَ هُوَ إِنْسَانٌ، إِنَّمَا هُوَ شَيْطَانٌ

“[Dajjal] is not human, rather he is a Satan.”

[Kitab al-Fitan by Nu’aim ibn Hammad, Hadith #1498 (Arabic Scan)] | [Urdu Scan]

Even the Sahaba and early Salaf knew that Dajjal could never be a literal human monster. They clearly said he is Satan!

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) on Dajjal

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) explained the true reality of Dajjal:

“The word Dajjal has two connotations: First, it signifies a group which supports falsehood and works with cunning and deceit. Secondly, it is the name of the Satan who is the father of all falsehood and corruption.

[Haqiqat-ul-Wahi, Ruhani Khazain, vol. 22, p. 326]

He further explained:

“Thus the Dajjal who is mentioned in the Ahadith is none other than the Satan who will be slain in the latter days. As Christianity is the perfect manifestation of Satan, Surah Al-Fatihah makes no mention of Dajjal, but prescribes supplication against the mischief of the Christians [Al-Dallin]…”

[Haqiqat-ul-Wahi, Ruhani Khazain, vol. 22, p. 326]

You can read his full explanation and complete references in our article: Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (AS) on Dajjal.

Conclusion

Unlike non-Ahmadis, we believe the Holy Quran is a complete book. It tells us about the biggest fitnah that humans will ever face.

Dajjal is Satan. And in the latter days, he manifested in the form of Christian missionaries spreading the lie that God has a son, backed by global materialism.
